A large group of enthusiastic “šuilokai,” led by their teacher, visited the Ieva Simonaitytė Memorial Museum, where guide Akvilė, speaking in the Lietuvininkai dialect, introduced them to key moments from the writer’s biography and her life in Priekulė. They also visited the authentic Vanagai Evangelical Lutheran Church, where I. Simonaitytė was confirmed. We thank Assoc. Prof. Dr. Silva Pocytė for her in-depth historical narrative that transported participants back to the pre-war period. At the Agluonėnai Ethnographic Homestead, participants learned more about the life and daily routines of the laukininkai—inhabitants of the old Prussian and Minor Lithuania fields who later acquired their own farms (Prussian villagers and Lietuvininkai). They also heard and learned many new words.
We thank everyone who took part and look forward to seeing you at the next Lietuvininkai Dialect School session on November 18.
