The Restoration Center of the Šilutė Hugo Šojus Museum began operating in 2000. At first, it was located in the former woodshed of the restored H. Šojus Manor premises. During its first years, only a wood conservator worked there, but over time the activities of the Restoration Center expanded. In 2015, the restorers moved into new facilities. Currently, the Restoration Center carries out conservation and restoration of historical metal and textile objects, documents, and printed materials. The Center employs qualified specialists who are certified in accordance with the procedures established by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania.
Activities and Services of the Restoration Center:
– provides conservation and restoration services for movable cultural heritage objects to museums, private individuals, and business entities;
– provides recommendations on the exhibition, storage, care, and transportation of movable cultural heritage objects;
– conducts thematic guided tours introducing visitors to the work of restorers and the processes they carry out.
TEXTILE RESTORATION
Various textile objects made of natural and synthetic materials, as well as textile components of objects, are conserved and restored. The following processes are carried out:
- – chemical or mechanical cleaning;
- – washing;
- – reconstruction of missing parts;
- – sewing of a protective storage bag.

RESTORATION OF HISTORICAL METAL OBJECTS
Various historical and ethnographic artifacts made of different metals and their alloys are conserved and restored. The following processes are carried out:
- – surface cleaning using mechanical and chemical methods;
- – surface passivation and corrosion inhibition;
- – straightening of deformations and application of protective coatings;
- – preparation for exhibition.
Paper Conservation and Restoration
Various handwritten and printed documents, photographs, and brochures are conserved and restored, and prepared for exhibition and storage. Paper restoration processes include:
- – documents are disinfected and their surfaces are cleaned;
- – unsuitable materials used during previous restoration are removed;
- – tears are repaired and missing fragments are reconstructed;
- – when necessary, stains are removed, the paper is washed, deacidified, and reinforced;
- – folders and protective enclosures for storage are produced.
THEMATIC TOUR AT THE RESTORATION CENTER
Tour participants will learn about conservation, restoration, and preventive conservation processes, see the work of restorers, and discover how textile, metal, and paper heritage objects are restored. Duration: 45 minutes.
